The Bozeman Climbing Team is divided into recreational, advanced, and competition teams.

If your climber is interested in joining the BCT, please read through the athlete expectations and team requirements below. If it sounds like your climber would be a good fit for one of our teams, please fill out the inquiry form below.

If you have further questions, please contact our team manager at bct@spireclimbing.com.

  • The Bozeman Climbing Team requires all athletes to have prior experience in a climbing class or on a team and/or a recommendation from a coach. All BCT athletes are expected to demonstrate motivation to improve and a willingness to receive and apply feedback from coaches.

We expect all BCT athletes to be respectful to coaches, teammates, and other climbers and to be positive and courteous members of their team and the larger climbing community, both inside and outside of practice.

BCT athletes are also expected to actively contribute to the team’s shared mission of improvement by demonstrating focused and engaged participation at every practice, and by arriving to practice on time, mentally and physically prepared to try their hardest.

  • All teams focus on bouldering September through January, and then Sport/Speed climbing February through the end of May. For athletes who participate in the USA Youth Climbing competition circuits, these seasons may be extended if they qualify for Divisional and/or National championships.

No practices are held on Bozeman Public School Holidays or Breaks. However, practices will be held on all PIR days.

  • Athletes typically begin climbing in our Youth Programs before joining our Recreation Teams. Once athletes develop physical and technical aptitude and demonstrate an innate desire to continue improving, they join our Advanced or Competition Teams. This trajectory may not always be the case as an athlete’s motivation and development can be nonlinear.

BCT coaches monitor each athlete in our program to determine what team will best serve individual athletes in each unique season of their climbing journey. It is our goal to place athletes on the teams that best fit their personal goals and developmental needs.

About the Growth Mindset

As you’ll read in the team mission and athlete requirements, the growth mindset is the foundation upon which BCT coaching and team culture at large is established. A growth mindset prioritizes the value of the learning process over accomplishments and awards. It invites athletes to seek out challenges that will help teach them new skills in the never-ending pursuit of mastery. The basic belief of the growth mindset that the BCT program aims to instill in its athletes is that skills can be honed with hard work, patience, and perseverance. With the growth mindset, there is no such thing as failure—there is only learning, which is success.

Meet the Coaches

  • Cam Brunner

    Head Coach

I came to Bozeman in 2019 from Washington state. Though the rock quality here might not be as good as back home, the community and adventure in Montana has kept me more than happy. Currently I route set and coach the climbing team here at Spire. I spend most of my free time ridding my bike and hanging out by the water.

  • Nick W.

If it wasn't the whiskey, then it sure was that sweet southern sandstone that made this wayward Kentuckian fall in love with rock climbing. For 20 years, rock climbing has been a significant part of his life whether it's climbing outside or grabbing plastic. Eventually, he learned that he could put that plastic wherever his heart desired, and thus began his journey as a setter. While he loves climbing on steep walls, he also have a deep respect for the less than vertical.

  • Kim L.

Born and raised in Billings, Montana, Kim grew up loving snow, rock, and anything outdoors. She learned to ski and backpack as soon as she could walk but didn’t find rock climbing until college. Sitting in freshman orientation, she signed up for “Rock Climbing 101” just for fun. She fell in love and went on to work at SteepWorld in Billings and spend countless hours on the sandstone bluffs surrounding the city. Coming to Bozeman in 2015 for the outdoor recreation that it provides, she now is stoked to keep exploring the local crags and play on some ice this winter.

  • Rachel Carr

Thanks for visiting this page and getting to know the coaches better! I’m a full-time floral designer, running my own business, Wild Willow, since 2020. I also run a small flower farm pursing my passion for growing a wide variety of flowers and veggies.

If I’m not designing a wedding or in the garden, I’m most likely climbing, mountain biking with my pup, on the water, skiing, or just hanging out with friends and family.

I began climbing at the age of 11 with Team Aiguille and quickly fell in love with the sport. I dedicated myself fully to training and competition, ultimately earning 62 titles and qualifying for Nationals every year I competed. In 2012, I was a member of the USA Climbing World Team for sport climbing.

After graduating from high school, I shifted my focus towards college and learning more about outdoor climbing ultimately taking a step back from the competition scene.

However, I do hope to return to competitive climbing in the near future, as it remains a deep passion of mine. Throughout my climbing journey, I have had the privilege of being coached by some world-class coaches. I look forward to passing on the knowledge and experience I have gained to help inspire and develop your kids.

  • Owen DeJohn

Hi, my name is Owen DeJohn, and I’ve been coaching with BCT for the past year. I’ve been climbing for 15 years and grew up competing in the USA Climbing Youth series with Team ABC. That experience sparked my love for the sport, which has grown over the years to include outdoor bouldering, sport climbing, and more recently, ice and alpine climbing. Climbing has taken me to incredible places and given me some of my favorite memories.

Now, I’m grateful to be able to share my love for the sport and pass on what I’ve learned. When I’m not coaching, I’m studying mechanical engineering and materials science at Montana State University and spending as much time on rock, ice or in the mountains as possible.
